This is Luna Maya, a birthing house in San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. Luna Maya was founded 16 years ago by an autonomous midwife named Cristina Alonso, and from the beginning, worked with traditional midwives in the region and other self-employed professional midwives as well.
This is the space where we hold prenatal consultations, we take vital signs, massages with rebozos, and listen to the baby’s heart. And while we do consultations of birth, we also provide gynecological services that are holistic and natural. This is the area for routine exams room where we do cervical cystologies, vaginal cultures, menopause consultations, consultations for the beginning of menstruation, and treatment of hormonal imbalances.
Luna Maya also has a space for children who visit the center with their mothers. Luna Maya also has a space for yoga and gatherings. Here we also hold alternative therapy like dance, yoga, acupuncture workshops, and homeopathy workshops. We are currently trying to build a medicinal garden, as you can see it is under construction, so that we can use it for medical services.
Here is the therapy room, where we have psychology services with a feminist focus, dynamic massage, prenatal massage, acupuncture, and stress relieving massages.
Luna Maya also has a birthing space for women to give birth, should they not have a space to give birth in, they can come to this space to give birth. It has a tub, heater, drinking water, blankets, a bed, and hammock, so that they can have a safe birth in a comfortable, warm, and respectful environment.
